The picks in detail
Who each one is for, and what to know before you buy.
- 15.75 in square entry
- 16.5 in globe height
- 8 days per cat (drawer)
- 90 day in-home trial
01Best overall
Whisker Litter-Robot 4
The reference self-cleaning litter box: proven laser-plus-weight cat detection, a wide entry, a drawer that lasts about a week per cat and a 90-day trial. Buy it unless you need cameras or have a cat over 25 lb.
Pick it ifOne to four cats between 3 and 25 lb in a home that wants the most tested safety design and can spare a 22 by 27 in patch of floor
Skip it ifCats over 25 lb, kittens under 3 lb, homes that use crystal or plant-based litter, or anyone who needs to tell two same-weight cats apart
What stands out
- Laser and weight sensors stop a cycle as soon as a cat is detected; Cats.com also lists a pinch sensor
- 15.75 in square entry and a 3 to 25 lb range, rated for up to four cats
- Cats.com puts cycle noise at roughly 25 to 35 dB, about 10 dB below the Litter-Robot 3
- Sealed drawer with a carbon filter goes about 8 days between emptying with one cat
- 90-day in-home trial and a 1-year warranty from a US company with its own support line
Flaws to know
- Clumping clay only; Whisker rules out plant-based, pellet and non-clumping litters and most crystals
- 16.5 in of globe height, an inch less than the Litter-Robot 5, and Cats.com found the interior smaller than the Litter-Robot 3's
- SmartScale tells cats apart by weight only, so two similar cats share a profile
- The free app keeps 7 days of history; longer trends need the paid Whisker+ membership
- Needs the separate carpet tray on soft flooring, which the Litter-Robot 5 builds in
Why it made the list. Laser plus weight sensing with per-cat SmartScale weights, a 15.75 in square entry, a 3 to 25 lb range, four-cat capacity, cycles Cats.com puts at 25 to 35 dB and a 90-day trial. Cats.com's runner-up (9.8 of 10, September 2026) and CNN Underscored's best overall, and the proven version of the design the 5 Pro refines.

02Best budget
PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin
The budget self-cleaning box from a brand with US support: quiet, sealed for two weeks, with weight tracking and a child lock. It senses a cat leaving, not arriving, and suits medium cats, so buy it with those limits in mind.
Pick it ifOne or two medium cats, a home that already uses clumping litter, and an owner who wants weight tracking and a sealed drawer without the Whisker price class
Skip it ifCats over about 15 lb, kittens under 2.5 lb, fast or skittish cats that dart into the box, or anyone who wants approach detection that halts a cycle
What stands out
- Side-to-side rotating drum that Cats.com describes as quiet, with a large opening for its class
- 6 L sealed drawer with an essential-oil deodorizer, rated by PetSafe for up to two weeks
- Child lock on the panel, on-demand cleaning and a delay of up to an hour after each visit
- App logs visits and tracks each cat's weight over time and warns when the drawer is filling
- One-year limited warranty and a 45-day satisfaction guarantee from a long-established US brand
Flaws to know
- Weight sensors detect a cat leaving; there is no approach sensor, so a cycle stops only if a cat climbs in (Cats.com)
- Cats.com found it a poor fit for large cats despite the 25 lb rating; the entry sits 12 in off the floor
- Ships unassembled, and Cats.com found assembly more involved than expected
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, no preset cleaning schedules
Why it made the list. An established US brand with a side-to-side rotating drum, exit sensing, a child lock, app weight tracking and a sealed 6 L drawer rated for two weeks. It has no approach sensor, so a cycle only stops when a cat climbs in, and its 12 in entry is cramped for cats over about 15 lb; Cats.com's best-budget pick, with those caveats.
All specs (9)
- Entry
- 12 in from the floor (manufacturer); Cats.com calls the opening large for the class
- Cat range
- Over 2.5 lb and at least six months old (Cats.com); up to 25 lb (manufacturer)
- Sensors
- Weight sensors detect exit; no approach sensor, so a cycle stops only when a cat climbs in (Cats.com)
- Cycle control
- On-demand cleaning, delay of up to an hour after use, child lock
- Waste drawer
- 6 L sealed drawer with deodorizer, rated up to two weeks (manufacturer)
- Litter
- Any litter per PetSafe; premium clumping recommended
- App
- PetSafe app over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi: weight tracking, usage log, drawer level
- Dimensions
- 18.9 x 20.9 x 26.4 in (PetSmart listing)
- Warranty
- 1-year limited warranty; 45-day satisfaction guarantee (manufacturer)
- 1080p cameras x2, night vision
- 17.5 in globe height
- 10 days per cat (drawer)
- 15.75 in square entry
03Best premium
Whisker Litter-Robot 5 Pro
The premium pick for homes with cats over 25 lb, five cats, or two cats the scale cannot tell apart, provided you will pay for Whisker+ to use the cameras. Everyone else should buy the Litter-Robot 4.
Pick it ifMulti-cat homes with same-weight cats, very large cats up to 30 lb, and owners who want video and per-cat urine and feces records for a vet
Skip it ifA single ordinary cat, homes that will not pay a monthly membership, or anyone who wants the most proven firmware rather than the newest hardware
What stands out
- Two 1080p cameras with night vision, one at the entry and one inside the globe, with AI facial identification backed by SmartScale weights
- 17.5 in of globe height, a 3 to 30 lb range and five cats per unit, on the same 22 by 27 in footprint as the Litter-Robot 4
- WasteID logs whether a visit produced urine or feces, a detail vets ask for
- Drawer rated for about 10 days per cat, a built-in carpet tray and a color LCD with physical buttons
- 9to5Toys and BGR both describe it as quieter than the previous generation; 90-day trial and 1-year warranty
Flaws to know
- BGR's February 2026 review reported setup crashes, false alerts and motor faults and recommended the Litter-Robot 4 for reliability
- Facial identification, 30 days of video and two-year trends require the paid Whisker+ membership
- Clumping clay litter only, and Cats.com found grains sticking above the liner
- Settings are changed in the app, not on the screen
- No verified Amazon listing yet; the buy link goes to a search
Why it made the list. Same footprint and entry as the 4 with 17.5 in of headroom, a 3 to 30 lb range, five cats per unit, two 1080p night-vision cameras that identify cats by face, and WasteID. Cats.com's number one (10 of 10, September 2026); early units drew bug reports from BGR, and no verified Amazon listing exists yet, so we link to a search.
All specs (9)
- Entry
- 15.75 x 15.75 in opening, 7 in step height (manufacturer)
- Interior
- 17.5 in globe height, 1 in more than the Litter-Robot 4 (Whisker comparison chart)
- Cat range
- 3 to 30 lb, up to 5 cats; semi-automatic mode for kittens under 3 lb (manufacturer)
- Sensors
- Multiple lasers plus weight sensors with SmartScale; WasteID urine and feces detection
- Cameras
- Two 1080p cameras with night vision, one facing the entry and one inside the globe; AI facial identification
- Waste drawer
- Sealed, carbon filter, about 10 days between emptying with one cat (manufacturer)
- Litter
- Standard-weight clumping clay only
- Dimensions and weight
- 22 x 27 in footprint, 29.9 in tall, 29.6 lb
- Warranty
- 1 year, 90-day in-home trial, optional 3-year extended plan
Image: PETKIT
- 20 days per cat (self-sealing bin)
- 3.3-22 lb cat range
- 210° 1080p rotating camera
- 20 safety sensors
04Best for multi-cat homes
PETKIT Purobot Ultra
The multi-cat pick: face-plus-weight records for up to 15 cats, stool images, a drum that stops on approach and a bin that seals its own bags, in the top price class. Cats over 22 lb, small bathrooms and owners who want generic trash bags should look elsewhere.
Pick it ifTwo or more cats under 22 lb, especially cats of similar weight, with an owner who wants per-cat health records and has hard floor space for a unit 32 in deep
Skip it ifCats over 22 lb, tight bathrooms, carpeted rooms, a single cat on a budget, or anyone who wants to use ordinary trash bags
What stands out
- 20 sensors; PETKIT states the drum stops as soon as a cat is near or inside, and its sideways rotation keeps the entrance open
- 1080p camera with a 210-degree lens recognizes up to 15 cats by face, pairs each visit with a weight and photographs the clumps
- Packs and seals a full bag at the press of a button and loads a new one; rated for up to 20 days with one cat, about 16 in Catster's test
- Odor control beat the Litter-Robot 4 in CNN Underscored's testing, and Catster smelled no litter over six weeks
- Clumping clay or tofu litter with two sifters, 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and a 2-year US warranty
Flaws to know
- Cats.com found face recognition labeled beta in the app and saw it confuse two cats that look nothing alike
- 20.94 x 32.2 in footprint, and CNN Underscored found the Litter-Robot 4 much quieter
- Bags work only with PETKIT's refill rings, and Cats.com found them thin enough to tear when full
- Small 9.84 x 8.54 in entry 10.43 in off the floor and a 22 lb ceiling; Cats.com's larger cats would not go in
- Full video playback and past days' activity need a paid PETKIT Care+ plan (Cats.com); no low-litter alert (Catster)
Why it made the list. Face recognition for up to 15 cats backed by weights, a rotating camera that photographs the clumps, 20 sensors that stop the drum on approach, an entrance that never closes and a bin that seals its own bags, rated for 20 days with one cat. One of Reviewed's two favorites and CNN Underscored's pick if money is no object; it is 32 in deep, louder than the Litter-Robot 4, and Cats.com found its face ID still in beta.
All specs (9)
- Entry
- 9.84 x 8.54 in opening, 10.43 in from the floor (manufacturer)
- Cat range
- 3.3 to 22 lb, 6 months and older; camera recognizes up to 15 cats (manufacturer)
- Sensors
- 20 sensors including proximity and weight; drum stops when a cat approaches or enters, entrance always open (manufacturer)
- Camera
- 1080p, 210-degree lens, rotates 180 degrees between room and box, IPX5, microphone and speaker; face recognition plus weight
- Waste bin
- Packs and seals bags from PETKIT refill rings (about 10 bags per ring); up to 20 days with one cat (manufacturer)
- Litter
- Most clumping litter, including clay and tofu, grains up to 12 mm long and 3 mm across; two sifters
- Noise
- 36 dB (manufacturer); CNN Underscored found the Litter-Robot 4 much quieter
- Dimensions and weight
- 20.94 x 32.20 x 24.09 in, about 32.2 lb (manufacturer)
- Warranty
- 2 years on US purchases from PETKIT or authorized sellers since January 2025 (PETKIT policy)
How to choose a self-cleaning litter box
A self-cleaning box is a motor, a set of sensors and a waste drawer built around your cat. The sensors are what separate a safe product from a hazard, and they are where cheap listings cut corners. The criteria below are in the order we weighted them.
01Demand a documented safety design
Every pick comes from a maker that publishes a cat weight range, the detection method, and what happens when a cat approaches or enters mid-cycle. Whisker uses a laser at the entry plus weight sensors in the base, and the globe stops and returns if either registers a cat; Cats.com's Litter-Robot 4 review also lists a pinch sensor. PETKIT lists 20 sensors on the Purobot Ultra, states that the drum stops when a cat is near or inside, and turns the drum sideways so the entrance never closes. PetSafe's ScoopFree SmartSpin is the one exception: it senses a cat leaving by weight and waits out a delay, but has no approach sensor, and Cats.com states that a cycle will not stop mid-spin unless the cat climbs in. It is here as a budget option with that limit spelled out, not as an equal.
Support matters as much as sensors. All three brands run US support; Whisker adds a 90-day in-home trial, PetSafe a 45-day guarantee and PETKIT a 2-year warranty.
02Match the entry and interior to your cat
Weight ceilings are generous, so read the entry and interior numbers. Both Litter-Robots share a 15.75 in square entry; the 4 has 16.5 in of globe height and a 25 lb ceiling, the 5 Pro 17.5 in and 30 lb, per Whisker's comparison chart. The PETKIT's entry is the smallest here at 9.84 by 8.54 in, sits 10.43 in off the floor and tops out at 22 lb; Cats.com's larger cats would not go in. The SmartSpin's entry is 12 in from the floor and, although PetSafe says 25 lb, Cats.com found it a poor fit for large cats; treat about 15 lb as the practical limit. A cat that stands to urinate needs a Litter-Robot's headroom, and an arthritic cat is best served by their 6.9 to 7 in step, the lowest here.
Minimum weights matter too: 3 lb for Whisker, 3.3 lb for PETKIT, and 2.5 lb plus six months of age for PetSafe according to Cats.com. Below those, the sensors cannot be trusted to see the cat.
03Count your cats and decide how to tell them apart
All four log each visit with a weight, which is enough when your cats differ by a few pounds; that is what the Litter-Robot 4 (up to four cats) and the SmartSpin handle. When two cats weigh about the same, only a camera separates their records: the 5 Pro's two cameras with Whisker+ identification, or the PETKIT's single rotating 210-degree camera, which pairs a face with the weight reading for up to 15 cats. Cats.com's October 2025 test found that feature still labeled beta and saw it confuse two cats that look nothing alike.
04Drawer days and odor
Rated days between emptying are for one cat: about 8 for the Litter-Robot 4, 10 for the 5 Pro, up to 14 for the SmartSpin's 6 L drawer and up to 20 for the PETKIT, whose bag Catster found filling in about 16. Divide by the number of cats. All four seal the drawer; Whisker adds a carbon filter, PetSafe essential-oil deodorizers, PETKIT an N60 deodorizer. Only the PETKIT seals the bag for you, using PETKIT's own refill rings, and it beat the Litter-Robot 4 on odor in CNN Underscored's testing.
05Noise
Cats.com puts a Litter-Robot 4 cycle at roughly 25 to 35 dB, and CNN Underscored found it much quieter than the Purobot Ultra, for which PETKIT quotes 36 dB. BGR and 9to5Toys both call the 5 Pro quieter than the 4, and Cats.com calls the SmartSpin quiet without a figure. If noise matters most, the Litter-Robots are the safer bet; a nervous cat cares more about the drum starting while it is nearby, which is the sensor question again.
06Litter
Whisker requires standard-weight clumping clay and rules out plant-based, pellet and non-clumping litters and most crystals. PETKIT accepts almost any clumping litter with grains up to 12 mm long and 3 mm across, including tofu, and ships with two sifters. PetSafe says any litter works and recommends premium clumping. If your cat is settled on tofu litter, the PETKIT is the only choice here with a full sensor set.
07Apps and what they charge for
All four apps are free for visit logs, weights and drawer alerts. Whisker keeps 7 days of history free; Whisker+ adds two years of trends and, on the 5 Pro, facial identification, 30 days of video and unlimited live view. PETKIT's free tier logs each cat's visits; Cats.com found full video playback and earlier days' history behind PETKIT Care+. PetSafe lists no subscription. Budget for the membership if you buy the 5 Pro; without it the cameras are mostly decorative.
08Designs to avoid
Two designs were excluded on safety grounds. The first is the rotating drum with a door, sold under unfamiliar names such as Amztoy and Autoscooper. A door that closes during a cycle is the pinch point Whisker and PETKIT engineer out, the sensor count is rarely published, and there is rarely US support to call. The second is the Neakasa M1, an open-top drum from a known brand. Neakasa's June 2026 firmware notice describes a dislodged front magnet letting the chamber rotate past its intended position; Truthful Paws reports two confirmed injuries and one death, and Mark's Tech Blogs documents a unit overturning after its mat magnets loosened. Neakasa made the update mandatory and redesigned the gear for the M1 Plus.
What we left out and why
Models we considered, and why each one did not make the list.
Neakasa M1 and M1 Plus
Excluded for the over-rotation history above. The M1 Plus gear cannot over-rotate, and Truthful Paws still calls it the best open-top box for large cats, but the same review documents bin sensors failing after three to seven months, leaving the drum inverted and the cat locked out, and buyers who ordered a Plus and received an original M1. We will revisit it after a year of clean reports.
Unknown-brand rotating drums with doors
Amztoy, Autoscooper and similar listings publish no sensor design and offer no US support. Not worth the risk at any discount.
PETKIT Purobot Max Pro 2
Our previous multi-cat pick. PETKIT still sells it, but it is missing from the Cats.com and TechnoMeow September 2026 guides and from CNN Underscored's and Reviewed's picks.
PETKIT PuraMax 2
Cats.com's best-odor-control pick and a CNN Underscored pick for small spaces, with a 7.87 in threshold. PETKIT's US store no longer sells it: its product page now redirects to the Purobot Max 3 (checked 2026-09-28).
PETKIT Purobot Max 3
Now in the PuraMax 2's place on PETKIT's US site: 12 sensors, a gear built so the entrance can never close, an 8.03 in threshold, a 7 L bin and no camera. No independent testing yet.
Litter-Robot 3 Connect
Cats.com measured it at 35 to 45 dB against 25 to 35 for the 4, and CNN Underscored also found it louder. Superseded.
Litter-Robot 5 (standard)
The Pro without the cameras. A sensible middle option; the 4 and the Pro bracket it, and Cats.com's review questioned whether the step up from the 4 is worth it.
CATLINK Scooper Young and PetSnowy
Mid-table at Cats.com (9.2 and 9.0), but outside the three brands whose safety documentation and US support we could confirm.
Casa Leo Leo's Loo Too and ELS PET
Cats.com's reviewer found the Leo's sifting poor and would not recommend it, and CNN Underscored said it fell short of expectations; ELS PET drew broken-unit and refund complaints in Cats.com's reader comments.
Frequently asked questions
Are self-cleaning litter boxes safe for kittens?
Not below the sensing floor: 3 lb for Whisker, 3.3 lb for PETKIT, and 2.5 lb plus six months for the SmartSpin according to Cats.com. PETKIT's app has a kitten protection mode that disables automatic cycling, but the simplest answer is a plain tray until the kitten is big enough.
Can I use tofu, pine or crystal litter?
Tofu works in the PETKIT within its grain limits. Whisker requires clumping clay. PetSafe says any litter works but recommends clumping.
How often will I empty the drawer with two cats?
Halve the one-cat figure: about 4 days for the Litter-Robot 4, 5 for the 5 Pro, a week for the SmartSpin and up to 10 for the PETKIT. Cats.com's guidance for the Litter-Robot 4 is weekly for one cat and twice weekly for two.
Do I need the subscription?
Not for the SmartSpin or the Litter-Robot 4. On the PETKIT it buys full video playback, earlier days' history and advanced health tracking. The Litter-Robot 5 Pro is different: facial identification, video history and long-term trends are Whisker+ features, so treat the membership as part of the price class.
Should I wait for Prime Big Deal Days or Black Friday?
Prime Big Deal Days are October 6 to 7 and Black Friday is November 27. Whisker's 90-day trial and PetSafe's 45-day guarantee make an early purchase low-risk, so if the current box is a daily chore, buy now.
Is an open-top box safer than a drum?
Not by itself. The Neakasa M1 is open-topped and still produced the worst incidents in this category. What makes a box safe is a published sensor design, a pause on approach and an entrance that cannot pinch.
How we chose
We compared self-cleaning litter boxes from the three brands with a documented safety design and US support, Whisker, PetSafe and PETKIT, on entry size and cat weight range, multi-cat capacity, waste-drawer days, noise, litter compatibility and what the app charges for. The Litter-Robot 4 is the box most homes should buy; the PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin is the budget option with a caveat, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro the premium one, and the PETKIT Purobot Ultra the multi-cat pick.
The shortlist was limited to boxes whose makers publish a weight range, a cat count and a detection method (weight plus laser, infrared or proximity sensing), an anti-pinch or always-open entry and a cycle pause, and who run US support. Every claim was checked against the manufacturer's page and independent testing by Cats.com, CNN Underscored, Reviewed, Catster, BGR and 9to5Toys; we have not run these boxes ourselves and attribute every finding. Unknown-brand rotating drums with doors and the Neakasa M1, which has documented over-rotation incidents, were excluded.
