Who it's for
The Litter-Robot 5 Pro is Whisker's top model and the number one pick in Cats.com's September 2026 ranking. It keeps the Litter-Robot 4's 22 by 27 in footprint and 15.75 in entry but adds an inch of interior height, raises the weight ceiling to 30 lb, supports five cats, and mounts two 1080p night-vision cameras that identify cats by face. It is the box for a multi-cat home where two cats weigh about the same, for anyone with a cat over 25 lb, and for owners who want video and per-cat health records.
It is the premium pick on our self-cleaning litter box list. It is not the box for a single ordinary cat, where the Litter-Robot 4 does the same job with a longer track record.
What stands out
Cat identification is the headline. One camera faces the entry and one sits inside the globe; Whisker's AI learns each cat's face from visits you confirm in the app, and SmartScale weight sensing backs it up. Cats.com's April 2026 review notes that training takes a few confirmed visits per cat and that visual identification and long-term trends sit behind the paid Whisker+ membership, while the free tier gives five minutes of live video a day and two days of recorded events. WasteID uses sensors and AI to log whether a visit produced urine or feces, which is the detail a vet asks for with a urinary problem; it was not fully working when Cats.com reviewed the box, and 9to5Toys saw it mislabel some visits.
The sensor set is the same idea as the 4, with more of it: multiple lasers plus weight sensors, and the same stop-and-return behavior when a cat is detected during a cycle. 9to5Toys and BGR both found it quieter than the previous generation, and Whisker's comparison chart lists 17.5 in of globe height against 16.5 in for the 4, which is why Whisker now rates it for 30 lb cats and five cats per unit. The drawer is larger, and Whisker says about 10 days per cat between emptying, versus 8 for the 4.
Other changes are practical: a color LCD with physical buttons shows litter and drawer levels without the app, the base has a built-in carpet tray, and Cats.com found fewer crevices to clean inside. The 90-day trial and 1-year warranty carry over.
Where it falls short
Reliability of early units is the main caution. BGR's February 2026 review reported setup crashes, a sluggish app, sensors that flagged activity when no cat was present and needed weekly resets, and recurring motor faults, and concluded that the Litter-Robot 4 might be the better buy for dependability. 9to5Toys, two months later, still saw false bin-full alerts and mislabeled waste types. Cats.com's review of the standard Litter-Robot 5 noted owner reports of Wi-Fi trouble and questioned whether the step up from the 4 is worth it. This is a first-year product.
The features that justify the price class need the subscription. Facial identification, 30 days of video and two-year trends are Whisker+ features; without them the Pro is a Litter-Robot 5 with cameras you can barely use. Settings are adjusted in the app, not on the screen, and 9to5Toys found the recessed buttons often need a second press.
Litter is still clumping clay only, Cats.com found grains sticking to the globe above the liner, and even at 17.5 in the reviewer thought very large cats would find it snug. We have not seen a public Amazon product listing for it, so our link goes to a search until one can be verified.
How it compares
The Litter-Robot 4 shares the entry and footprint, gives up an inch of headroom, 5 lb of weight rating, one cat of capacity, the cameras and WasteID, and in return has years of firmware behind it and fewer reported faults. For a home with one to four cats that differ in weight, it is the better value.
The PETKIT Purobot Ultra also identifies cats by face, with a single rotating 210-degree camera, and adds a bin that seals its own bags, rated for 20 days. Its 9.84 by 8.54 in entry, 22 lb ceiling and 32 in depth are the trade, and Cats.com found its face ID still labeled beta, so it is the multi-cat alternative for smaller cats.

Buy the Litter-Robot 5 Pro if you have five cats, a cat over 25 lb, two cats the scale cannot tell apart, or a cat with a urinary history whose visits you want logged per cat, and you are willing to pay for Whisker+ to unlock the cameras.
Verdict
Buy the Litter-Robot 5 Pro if you have cats over 25 lb, five cats, or two cats the scale cannot tell apart, and you will pay for Whisker+ to use the cameras. Everyone else should buy the Litter-Robot 4 and keep the difference.
