At a glance
What stands out
- Laser and weight sensors stop a cycle as soon as a cat is detected; Cats.com also lists a pinch sensor
- 15.75 in square entry and a 3 to 25 lb range, rated for up to four cats
- Cats.com puts cycle noise at roughly 25 to 35 dB, about 10 dB below the Litter-Robot 3
- Sealed drawer with a carbon filter goes about 8 days between emptying with one cat
- 90-day in-home trial and a 1-year warranty from a US company with its own support line
Flaws to know
- Clumping clay only; Whisker rules out plant-based, pellet and non-clumping litters and most crystals
- 16.5 in of globe height, an inch less than the Litter-Robot 5, and Cats.com found the interior smaller than the Litter-Robot 3's
- SmartScale tells cats apart by weight only, so two similar cats share a profile
- The free app keeps 7 days of history; longer trends need the paid Whisker+ membership
- Needs the separate carpet tray on soft flooring, which the Litter-Robot 5 builds in

Who it's for
The Litter-Robot 4 is the box to buy when you want the most thoroughly documented safety design in the category and do not need cameras. Whisker rates it for cats from 3 to 25 lb and for up to four cats, the entry is a 15.75 in square, and a laser sensor and weight sensors both watch for a cat before and during a cycle. It is Cats.com's runner-up in its September 2026 ranking, one step behind the newer Litter-Robot 5 Pro, and CNN Underscored's best overall pick, which found it caught small clumps better than most of the boxes in its test pool.
It suits a household with one to four cats of ordinary size that can give up a 22 by 27 in patch of floor, uses clumping clay litter, and would rather have a design that has been on sale for several years than the newest features. It is the top pick on our self-cleaning litter box list for that reason.
What stands out
Safety is the reason to pay for a Whisker over a no-name drum. The globe will not start a cycle while the weight sensors register a cat, a laser watches the entry, and Cats.com's review lists a pinch sensor as a third layer; if a cat is detected mid-cycle the globe stops and returns to its home position. Whisker publishes the weight range and the cat count rather than leaving buyers to guess, which is the standard every pick on our list had to meet.
Cycling is quiet. Cats.com's October 2025 review puts a cycle at roughly 25 to 35 dB, about 10 dB below the Litter-Robot 3, and CNN Underscored found it much quieter than the PETKIT Purobot Ultra it tested alongside. Whisker calls the mechanism QuietSift.
The waste drawer sits in the base, sealed, with a carbon filter, and Whisker says a single cat can go about 8 days between emptying. The app shows litter level and how full the drawer is, logs every visit, and SmartScale records a weight at each visit so you can see a trend for each cat. Cats.com credits the repositioned carbon filter and the ridged step mat for better odor control and less tracking than the previous model.
Whisker is a US company that sells direct and through Amazon, offers a 90-day in-home trial and puts a 1-year warranty on the unit. That matters with a product that has a motor, a sensor array and an app.
Where it falls short
Litter choice is restricted. Whisker requires standard-weight clumping clay; plant-based, pellet and non-clumping litters are excluded, along with most crystal litters, and Cats.com found hard-clumping clay worked best. If your cat is settled on a tofu or pine litter, this is the wrong box.
The interior is not huge. Whisker's comparison chart lists 16.5 in of globe height against 17.5 in for the Litter-Robot 5, and Cats.com measured the interior at about 19 by 18 in with a 14 in litter bed, smaller than the Litter-Robot 3's 20 by 20 in. A big cat under 25 lb fits, but Cats.com flags the 4 as not ideal for large cats, and anything heavier is outside the rating.
SmartScale tells cats apart by weight only. Two cats within a pound of each other share a profile, which is the problem the 5 Pro's cameras and the PETKIT Purobot Ultra solve.
Owner reports collected by Cats.com mention occasional cycling errors, Wi-Fi drops, urine pooling behind the tray and liners torn by determined diggers. The free app keeps 7 days of history; longer trends need the paid Whisker+ membership. On carpet you need Whisker's separate carpet tray, which the Litter-Robot 5 builds in.
How it compares
The Litter-Robot 5 Pro has the same footprint and entry but an inch more headroom, a 3 to 30 lb range, five-cat capacity, two cameras with facial identification and a drawer rated for about 10 days per cat. BGR's February 2026 review found early 5 Pro units buggy and called the 4 the safer choice for reliability, and Cats.com scores the two a fraction apart. Pay for the Pro if you need to know which cat did what; buy the 4 if you want the proven version.
The PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin is the budget alternative: an established brand, a child lock and app weight tracking, but no approach sensor, a 12 in entry and a tight fit for cats over about 15 lb.

Bottom line. Buy the Litter-Robot 4 if you have one or two cats of ordinary size, or up to four cats that differ in weight, and you want the version with the fewest reported faults. Buy the Litter-Robot 5 Pro if you have five cats, a cat over 25 lb, two cats the scale cannot tell apart, or a cat with a urinary history whose visits you want logged per cat, and you are willing to pay for Whisker+ to unlock the cameras.
Verdict
The Litter-Robot 4 is the default recommendation for one to four cats between 3 and 25 lb. Its laser-plus-weight detection, quiet cycle, sealed drawer and 90-day trial are the benchmark, and its limits, clay litter only and weight-based cat identification, are ones most homes can live with.
