Litter-Robot 4 vs Litter-Robot 5 Pro: Are the Cameras and WasteID Worth the Extra Money?

Same 22 by 27 in footprint, same 15.75 in entry, same clumping-clay rule. The 5 Pro adds an inch of headroom, 5 lb of weight rating, a fifth cat, two cameras with face-based cat ID and WasteID, while the 4 keeps a proven sensor set and several years of firmware fixes.

Size, capacity and the drawer

Whisker's comparison chart shows what the extra tier buys. Both boxes share a 22 by 27 in footprint and a 15.75 in square entry, so neither is easier to place. Inside, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro has 17.5 in of globe height against 16.5 in for the Litter-Robot 4, and that inch is why Whisker rates the Pro for 3 to 30 lb cats and up to five of them, while the 4 is rated for 3 to 25 lb and four cats.

For most homes the numbers are academic. An average cat fits either box with room to turn around, and Cats.com's April 2026 review of the Pro still thought a very large cat would find it snug at 17.5 in. The rating matters at the edge: a Maine Coon or a heavy neutered male over 25 lb is outside the 4's spec, and a five-cat household is outside its cat count. The Pro also has a semi-automatic mode for kittens under 3 lb, which the 4 lacks.

The drawer is the other capacity change. Whisker says one cat can go about 8 days between emptying on the 4 and about 10 days on the Pro. Both drawers are sealed with a carbon filter; the Pro's is simply larger. With two or three cats both intervals shrink to a few days, so this is a convenience rather than a reason to choose.

Sensing and cat identification

The 4 uses a laser at the entry plus weight sensors under the globe, and Cats.com lists a pinch sensor as a third safeguard. If a cat is registered before or during a cycle, the globe stops and returns home. SmartScale records a weight at each visit and assigns it to a cat profile by weight alone.

The Pro keeps the laser-and-weight approach, with more lasers, and adds two 1080p night-vision cameras, one facing the entry and one inside the globe. Whisker's AI learns each cat's face from visits you confirm in the app; Cats.com found it takes a few confirmed visits per cat before the system assigns them itself. That solves the 4's real weakness: two cats within a pound of each other share a SmartScale profile, so their weight trends and visit counts blur together. The 4 is not less safe, just less able to say who was there.

BGR's February 2026 review called the cameras a novelty in a home that did not need them; 9to5Toys found the inside camera useful when traveling.

WasteID and what the app charges for

WasteID is exclusive to the 5 generation. Sensors and the interior camera decide whether a visit produced urine or feces, the box adjusts its cycle timing to suit, and the app logs the type per visit. Whisker says accuracy improves over roughly 30 days. It was not live when Cats.com first reviewed the Pro and has since shipped; 9to5Toys saw it label some urine visits as solid. For a cat with a history of urinary blockages or cystitis, a per-cat count of urine visits is the record a vet asks for, and the 4 cannot produce it.

The free app tier is similar on both boxes: 7 days of activity, individual cat weights, litter and drawer levels, and notifications. The Pro adds five minutes of live video a day and two days of clips. Everything that makes the Pro a Pro sits behind the paid Whisker+ membership: AI facial identification, 30 days of video, unlimited live streaming, two-year trends, daily recaps and anomaly alerts. On the 4, Whisker+ mainly buys history beyond 7 days. Treat the membership as part of the Pro's running cost; without it you are paying for cameras you can barely use.

Noise, reliability and support

Cats.com puts the 4 at about 25 to 35 dB during a cycle, roughly 10 dB below the Litter-Robot 3. Whisker has not published a figure for the Pro, but BGR and 9to5Toys both describe it as quieter and smoother than the 4, with BGR adding that the difference did not change how it felt about daily use. Call it a draw: both are quiet enough for a bedroom hallway.

Reliability is where the 4 wins. It has been on sale for several years and its firmware has had that long to mature. BGR's early 5 Pro unit needed an hour and several app crashes to set up, threw scale-activity alerts with no cat present that required weekly resets, and logged recurring motor faults; the review concluded the 4 might be the more dependable buy. 9to5Toys still saw false bin-full alerts at 50 percent in April 2026, though updates were arriving. Cats.com's owner reports for the 4 mention occasional cycling errors, Wi-Fi drops and torn liners, so neither is fault-free, but the 4's problems are the known kind.

Support is identical: a 1-year warranty, a 90-day in-home trial with return shipping paid by the buyer, and an optional 3-year extended plan. The 4 has a verified Amazon listing; for the Pro we have not seen one, so our link goes to a search.

Who should buy which

Buy the Litter-Robot 4 if you have one or two cats, or up to four that differ in weight by more than a pound or two, and none is over 25 lb. You get the same entry, footprint and safety logic without first-year bugs, and the free app tier covers what most owners check.

Buy the Litter-Robot 5 Pro if you have five cats, a cat heavier than 25 lb, two cats the scale confuses, or a cat with a urinary history where a per-cat urine log is worth a membership fee. Go in expecting to pay for Whisker+ and to tolerate some app rough edges while the firmware matures.

If neither fits, the wider field, including the PETKIT Purobot Ultra with its own face-based cat ID, is on our self-cleaning litter box list.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Litter-Robot 4 if you have one or two cats of ordinary size, or up to four cats that differ in weight, and you want the version with the fewest reported faults. Buy the Litter-Robot 5 Pro if you have five cats, a cat over 25 lb, two cats the scale cannot tell apart, or a cat with a urinary history whose visits you want logged per cat, and you are willing to pay for Whisker+ to unlock the cameras.
