Levoit Core 600S vs Winix 5510: More Air or Lower Running Costs?

Both are single-fan towers of about 13.5 lb that get their rated output by spinning hard, and both get loud at the top. The Levoit moves about 50 percent more air and has a real particle sensor; the Winix answers with separate carbon and True HEPA filters that each last a year.

Cleaning power and room size

This is the row that decides most purchases, and the Levoit wins it clearly. The Energy Star listing for the Levoit Core 600S (model LAP-C601S-WUS, which Levoit now sells as the Core 600S-P) records 391 cfm for smoke, 398 for dust and 436 for pollen. The Winix 5510 is AHAM Verifide at 253 cfm smoke, 252 dust and 247 pollen. Converted to AHAM's allergy-grade benchmark of 4.8 air changes per hour, that is 606 sq ft for the Levoit and 392 sq ft for the Winix with 8 ft ceilings.

Independent measurements match the labels closely. HouseFresh measured a top-speed PM1 CADR of 375 cfm for the Levoit (August 2026) and 248 cfm for the Winix (July 2026), so the Levoit moves roughly 50 percent more air. In the same 728 cubic foot test room, the Levoit cut incense smoke to zero in 16 minutes and the Winix in 24. HouseFresh's own room recommendations are slightly more conservative: 562 sq ft for the Levoit and 372 sq ft for the Winix, both at five air changes an hour.

In practice: under about 400 sq ft, both units are big enough. For an open kitchen and living area of 500 to 600 sq ft, only the Levoit is.

Noise at the speeds you will actually use

Neither purifier is quiet at full output. HouseFresh measured the Levoit at 62.3 dBA from 3 ft on speed 4 and the Winix at 67.2 dBA; AirPurifierFirst recorded 65.7 dBA for the Winix on its top speed. The Winix is the louder of the two at the top, and it delivers less air while doing it.

One step down the picture changes. On speed 3, HouseFresh measured 53.8 dBA for the Levoit and 51.6 dBA for the Winix. Lower still, the Winix is the quieter machine, with 35.2 dBA in sleep mode and 40.8 dBA on speed 2, against 37.9 and 45.9 dBA for the Levoit. The catch is output: below 45 dBA HouseFresh measured only 125 cfm from the Winix, and the Levoit gave 156 cfm on speed 1 at 44.4 dBA, which HouseFresh described as an irritating whir. Run either one quietly all night and you get a medium-room purifier, not a large-room one.

The manufacturer figures, 26 to 55 dB for the Levoit and 23.5 dB on the Winix's slowest speed, use different methods and are best read as each brand's own ranking of its speeds.

Filters, odors and running cost

Here the Winix pulls ahead. It uses three separate parts: a washable fine-mesh pre-filter, a pellet activated-carbon filter and a True HEPA filter, with the carbon and HEPA elements each rated for 12 months per Winix, which sells the replacement as Filter Q. A PlasmaWave ionizer stage sits after the filters and can be switched off, per AirPurifierFirst.

The Levoit uses a single bonded 3-in-1 filter, pre-filter, main filter and activated carbon in one piece, rated for six to twelve months. HouseFresh budgets for up to two a year and notes that when the carbon is used up you replace the particle media with it. The standard Levoit filter holds 160 g of carbon, per HouseFresh; Levoit's specialty filters carry 360 g.

Put together, the Winix needs one filter set a year and the Levoit up to two, so the Winix has the lower yearly filter spend. Odor handling also favors the Winix's dedicated pellet carbon, which is why our large-room air purifier guide ranks it second only to the Coway Airmega 400S for smells.

One wording note on the Levoit: HouseFresh reports that Levoit marketed it as HEPA H13 in 2022 and dropped that claim in 2023 after a Better Business Bureau challenge from Dyson. Levoit's current claim is HEPA-grade efficiency in sleep mode, and Energy Star lists the filter as HEPA-type. Its measured CADR shows it catches fine particles well regardless.

Sensors, app and auto mode

The Levoit has the better brain. It uses a laser dust sensor for PM2.5 and shows the reading in micrograms per cubic meter on the unit, and HouseFresh notes it reacts faster than an optical sensor and does not need regular cleaning. Levoit's product page lists VeSync app control with schedules, filter-life tracking and air quality history, plus Alexa and Google Assistant.

The Winix's sensor reads gases and odors rather than particles, according to both HouseFresh and AirPurifierFirst. Auto mode therefore reacts to cooking or cleaning sprays but can sit idle while pollen or dust drift in. Both units have a light sensor that drops them into sleep mode when the room goes dark, and the Winix connects to the Winix Smart app and Alexa.

Power, size and the fine print

Both are cheap to run. HouseFresh measured 48.1 W on the Levoit's top speed and 52.6 W on the Winix's, and both stay under 8 W on speed 1. In standby the Winix draws 0.65 W against 1.3 W for the Levoit. The Levoit is on the current Energy Star V3.0 list, certified in November 2024 with 0.0 ppb ozone recorded; the Winix 5510 was not on that list when we checked in October 2026, although AirPurifierFirst describes it as Energy Star certified.

The shapes suit different spots. The Levoit is a 12.3 in square cylinder, 23.6 in tall and 13.7 lb, that draws air from all sides and can sit in a corner. The Winix is 13.3 lb and only 8.3 in deep, so it tucks flat against a wall. Levoit offers a 2-year limited warranty; the Winix's 2-year term requires registration, per AirPurifierFirst.

Winix's own website now lists the 5520 rather than the 5510. HouseFresh describes the two as near-identical units that share the same filter, with the 5510 drawing slightly less power and doing a little better at the quiet speeds, and HouseFresh rates the 5510 the better value of the pair.

Who should buy which

Buy the Levoit Core 600S if the room is over 400 sq ft or open-plan, if dust, pollen or wildfire smoke are the main concern, or if you want auto mode to respond to a real PM2.5 reading. It clears a room about a third faster than the Winix and is less loud doing it, but plan on up to two bonded filters a year.

Buy the Winix 5510 if the room is a bedroom or living room under about 400 sq ft, if cooking smells and odors matter, or if you want the cheaper unit with one filter set a year and a slim body that fits against a wall. Accept that its top speed is the louder of the two and that its sensor ignores dust.

If neither fits, or you want a quieter top speed, the best air purifiers for large rooms list covers the Blueair and Coway alternatives.
