Winix 5510
The best budget large-room purifier: AHAM-verified 253 cfm smoke CADR for a 392 sq ft room, real carbon, a washable pre-filter and 12-month filters. Buy it for a big bedroom or living room; it is too loud on top speed for an open plan.

What stands out
- AHAM-verified 253 smoke / 252 dust / 247 pollen cfm; HouseFresh measured 248 cfm PM1 CADR
- True HEPA plus a pellet activated-carbon filter, both rated 12 months, with a washable mesh pre-filter
- Wi-Fi app, Alexa, auto mode from an onboard sensor and a light sensor for sleep mode
- Compact at 13.3 lb; HouseFresh measured 52.6 W on top speed and under 7 W on the two lowest speeds
Flaws to know
- Loud on speed 4: 67.2 dBA at 3 ft in HouseFresh's test and 65.7 dBA in AirPurifierFirst's
- CADR drops to 125 cfm at the sub-45 dBA speeds, per HouseFresh
- The sensor reads odors and gases, not PM2.5, so auto mode can miss dust and pollen

Who it's for
The Winix 5510 is for the buyer who wants a proper HEPA and carbon purifier for a large bedroom or living room and does not want to pay for the last hundred cfm. Winix's AHAM-verified numbers, 253 cfm smoke, 252 dust and 247 pollen, put it at 392 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour. That is the smallest honest room size on our large-room list, but it is still a big room, and the 5510 gets there with a pellet carbon filter and a washable pre-filter that the pricier Blueair does not match.
It replaces the Winix 5500-2, which Winix has stopped producing for the US market according to AirPurifierFirst. If you liked the 5500-2's formula, this is the same idea in a smaller body with Wi-Fi added, although the carbon filter is no longer washable.
What stands out
The filtration stack is the reason to buy it. Air passes through a washable fine-mesh pre-filter, then a pellet activated-carbon filter for odors and gases, then a True HEPA filter, with Winix's PlasmaWave stage after that. AirPurifierFirst estimates about half a pound of carbon, the same as in the 5500-2. Both the carbon and HEPA elements are rated for 12 months, and they are separate parts rather than a bonded cartridge, which is unusual at this level. Winix lists AHAM, UL and CARB certifications. AirPurifierFirst's own test recorded a 96 percent drop in particle readings in a 320 sq ft room over an hour.
Independent measurements back the CADR figure. HouseFresh's July 2026 test found a PM1 CADR of 248 cfm on top speed and cleared its 728 cubic foot test room in 24 minutes, one minute slower than the old 5500-2 in the same test and, the site says, on par with the Rabbit Air A3. Power draw was 52.6 W on speed 4 and under 7 W on speeds 1 and 2, with 0.65 W in standby; AirPurifierFirst measured 53.4 W at maximum and lists 65 W as the rated figure.
The 5510 also adds what the 5500-2 lacked: a Wi-Fi app, Alexa support and an auto mode fed by an onboard sensor, across five fan speeds. A light sensor dims the display and drops the unit into sleep mode when the room goes dark. At 13.3 lb and 8.3 in deep it is the slimmest unit here and the easiest to tuck against a wall, and HouseFresh calls the app clean and free of advertising, if basic next to rivals.
Where it falls short
Noise at full output is the clear weakness. HouseFresh measured 67.2 dBA at 3 ft on speed 4, and AirPurifierFirst recorded 65.7 dBA on turbo. That is the loudest figure among our four picks and the price of pulling 250 cfm through a compact body with a smaller filter than the 5500-2 had. Speed 3 drops to 51.6 dBA, which most people can live with in a living room, but at that point you are no longer getting the rated CADR.
HouseFresh's second criticism follows from the first: at the sub-45 dBA speeds the PM1 CADR fell to 125 cfm, so if you plan to run it quietly all day in a bedroom it will behave like a medium-room purifier, not a large-room one. HouseFresh's own room recommendation is 372 sq ft at five air changes, a shade under Winix's figure.
The sensor is the third limit. AirPurifierFirst notes it reads odors and gases rather than PM2.5, so auto mode reacts to cooking and cleaning products but can sit idle while pollen or dust drift in. The Levoit Core 600S and Coway Airmega 400S both use particle sensors. Two smaller points: the replacement filter, which Winix calls Filter Q, is a different part from the 5500-2's, so old spares will not fit, and the 2-year warranty depends on registering the unit, per AirPurifierFirst.
How it compares
Against the Levoit Core 600S, the Levoit moves about 50 percent more air (375 cfm measured by HouseFresh versus 248) at a slightly lower top-speed noise level and similar power draw, and it has a laser particle sensor. The Winix answers with separate carbon and HEPA filters that each last a year, so its running costs are lower and its odor handling is better. For a 400 sq ft room the Winix is enough; for 600 sq ft, step up to the Levoit. The full numbers are in our Levoit Core 600S vs Winix 5510 comparison.
Against the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max, the Blueair delivers 435 cfm smoke CADR at a much lower rated noise figure and a lower rated draw, but its filter costs more per year and its carbon layer is thin. The Winix is the choice when the budget is fixed and the room is under 400 sq ft.

| Sensor and app | Winix 5510: Gas and odor sensor, not PM2.5; Winix Smart app, Alexa | Levoit 600S, better: Laser PM2.5 sensor with numeric readout; VeSync app, Alexa, Google Assistant Better |
| Energy Star | Winix 5510: Not on the current V3.0 list (October 2026); AirPurifierFirst reports it certified | Levoit 600S, better: Certified, on the current V3.0 list Better |
| Size and weight | Winix 5510, better: 22.2 x 13.6 x 8.3 in, 13.3 lb Better | Levoit 600S: 23.6 x 12.3 x 12.3 in, 13.7 lb |
Bottom line. Buy the Levoit Core 600S for an open-plan space up to about 600 sq ft, for dust and pollen control, or if you want auto mode driven by a PM2.5 reading. Buy the Winix 5510 for a bedroom or living room under about 400 sq ft, for cooking smells and odors, or if you want the cheaper unit with the lower yearly filter spend.
Verdict
The Winix 5510 is the sensible large-room purifier for a bedroom or living room up to about 390 sq ft: verified CADR, real carbon, a washable pre-filter, 12-month filters and an app, in the lowest price class of the group. Its top speed is loud and its quiet speeds are weak, so it is not the unit for an open plan. Within its size it is hard to argue with.
