Dyson V12 Detect Slim vs V15 Detect: Is the Bigger Dyson Worth It?

Both sticks carry a green laser on the hard-floor head, a piezo particle sensor with an LCD readout, whole-machine sealed filtration and a 60-minute Eco rating. The V15 adds more suction, twice the bin, the Digital Motorbar and better carpet results; the V12 answers with 1.6 lb less weight and a push button instead of a trigger.

Weight and the button

This is the V12's case, and for many buyers it is the whole case. Dyson's US pages list the V12 Detect Slim at 5.22 lb and the V15 Detect at 6.83 lb, a gap of about 1.6 lb. Most of it sits in the handle: Vacuum Wars weighed the V12's at 1,480 g and the V15's at 2,069 g, which is the part you hold up on stairs, along a ceiling line or over a sofa.

The controls widen the gap in daily use. The V12 has a single power button: press once and it runs. The V15 runs only while you squeeze the trigger, and TechGearLab reported finger fatigue over a whole-house session. TechGearLab scored the V12 higher on ease of use, 7.6 against 7.1, the only category in its testing where the smaller Dyson came out ahead.

Suction and carpet cleaning

Here the V15 wins every measurement. Dyson rates it at 240 AW against 150 AW for the V12. Vacuum Wars measured 92 inches of suction and 57 CFM at the V12's base; its V15 review now lists 124 inches of sealed suction, and the chart in its V12 review shows the V15 at 112 inches and 68 CFM. On either V15 figure, the V12 delivers roughly three quarters to four fifths of the bigger machine's pull.

The cleaning results follow the suction. On Vacuum Wars' embedded-sand carpet test the V15 scored a perfect 100 and the V12 scored 96, which is still well above the cordless average of 92 that Vacuum Wars lists. TechGearLab's numbers show a wider gap: 94 percent pickup on low-pile carpet for the V15 against 78 percent for the V12, and 49 against 44 percent on high pile. Part of the difference is the head. The V15 ships with the Digital Motorbar, the V12 with the standard Motorbar, and Vacuum Wars also found the V12's Motorbar struggled with large debris on hard floors.

On hard floors the two are close. Both use a soft roller with a green laser for that job, Vacuum Wars saw near-perfect pickup from the V12's Laser Slim Fluffy head, and TechGearLab measured 95 percent on hardwood for the V12 against 99 percent for the V15.

Run time, bin and charging

Dyson rates both at up to 60 minutes in Eco, but TechGearLab's timed runs separate them: 64 minutes on low for the V15 against 36 for the V12. At max the two are nearly level, 9 minutes against 8. Both batteries can be swapped for a spare, per Dyson.

The bin is the bigger daily difference. The V15 holds 0.77 L; Dyson's US page lists the V12 at 0.35 L, under half that. TechGearLab found the V12's bin fills within a session, is fiddly to release and throws clog warnings when full. In a small apartment that is a minor chore; in a large carpeted house or with a shedding pet it means stopping mid-clean.

Charging favors the V12. Dyson quotes about 4 hours against about 4.5 for the V15, and TechGearLab timed 2.7 and 3.8 hours.

Sensor, filtration and noise

The shared features are a real reason the V12 exists. Both have the piezo sensor that counts particles at the inlet, shows them by size on the LCD and raises power in Auto when the count climbs. Dyson rates both machines' sealed filtration at 99.99 percent of particles down to 0.3 microns, and TechGearLab's particle counter rated both excellent, with readings of 67 for the V12 and 55 for the V15, where lower is better.

Hair handling is good on both. Vacuum Wars saw no tangling on either of the V12's full-size heads with short or long hair, and found the V15's Hair Screw Tool resisted wrapping with hair up to 7 inches. On pet hair, TechGearLab measured 88 percent on low pile for the V15 against 75 percent for the V12.

Noise goes to the V15, which is quieter at max despite more suction: 76 dB against 85 dB at Vacuum Wars, and 79 against 84 dBA at TechGearLab.

What the testers found

The rankings line up with the numbers. Vacuum Wars places the V15 first among cordless vacuums and the V12 fifth as of its October 16, 2026 update. TechGearLab scored the V15 78, third of 21, and the V12 67, tenth of 21, and rated the V15 higher in every category except ease of use. Both sources treat the V12 as a machine for smaller spaces and lighter cleaning rather than as a cut-price V15.

Who should buy which

Buy the V12 Detect Slim if you live in an apartment or a home that is mostly hard floor, if you carry the vacuum up and down stairs, or if the V15's weight and trigger would keep it in the closet. You keep the laser, the sensor and the sealed filtration at a lower price class; you give up suction, carpet pickup, half the bin and a quieter motor.

Buy the V15 Detect if your home has real carpet, a shedding pet or enough floor space to fill a small bin before you finish. It costs more, weighs more and makes you hold a trigger, but it measured better than the V12 in every cleaning test both sources ran.

If neither suits you, our list of the best cordless stick vacuums covers self-emptying and longer-running alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dyson V15 worth it over the V12?

If you have carpet or pets, yes. The V15 scored 100 against 96 on Vacuum Wars' carpet deep-clean test, picked up 94 percent on low-pile carpet against 78 percent at TechGearLab, and has twice the bin. In a small, mostly hard-floor home the lighter V12 is the better buy.

Which is lighter, the V12 Detect Slim or the V15 Detect?

The V12. Dyson lists it at 5.22 lb against 6.83 lb for the V15, and Vacuum Wars weighed the handles at 1,480 g and 2,069 g.

Do the V12 and V15 both have the laser and the dust sensor?

Yes. Both have a green laser on the soft-roller hard-floor head, a piezo sensor that counts particles and raises power in Auto, and an LCD that shows the count. Both also have sealed filtration that Dyson rates at 99.99 percent of particles down to 0.3 microns.

Which runs longer on a charge?

Dyson rates both at up to 60 minutes in Eco, but TechGearLab got 64 minutes on low from the V15 and 36 from the V12. At max power both lasted about 8 to 9 minutes.

Does the V12 have a trigger like the V15?

No. The V12 uses a push button that keeps it running without holding anything, while the V15 runs only while you squeeze its trigger. TechGearLab reported finger fatigue with the V15 over a whole-house clean.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the V12 Detect Slim if you live in an apartment or a mostly hard-floor home, clean a lot of stairs, or find a 6.8 lb stick and a held trigger tiring. Buy the V15 Detect if your home has real carpet, a shedding pet or enough floor to fill a small bin every session; it measures stronger in every cleaning test and is the cordless Vacuum Wars ranks first.
