Dyson V12 Detect Slim

The V12 Detect Slim is the cordless to buy for an apartment, a house with stairs or anyone who finds the V15 heavy. Its small bin and weaker deep-carpet pickup make it the wrong choice for a large carpeted house.

Who it's for

The V12 Detect Slim is the V15 for people who do not need the V15's size. It keeps the parts that make the bigger machine special, the laser hard-floor head, the piezo particle sensor, the LCD and whole-machine sealed filtration, on a body that weighs 5.2 lb complete and 1,480 g in the handle. Vacuum Wars ranks it fourth among cordless vacuums as of September 24, 2026, one place behind the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty.

On our list of the best cordless stick vacuums it is the pick for apartments, townhouses with stairs, mostly hard-floor homes and anyone whose wrist objects to a 6.8 lb stick. TechGearLab reached the same conclusion: a machine for smaller spaces and everyday touch-ups on hardwood.

What stands out

Weight and the button. The V12 is 1.6 lb lighter than the V15 and about 2.3 lb lighter than the V16, and most of the saving is in the handle, which is what you notice on stairs. Dyson also replaced the trigger with a single power button: press once and let go. For anyone who found the V15's trigger tiring, that alone can decide it.

The cleaning is closer to the V15 than the weight suggests. Vacuum Wars measured 92 inches of sealed suction and 57 CFM at the base against a 150 AW rating, about 82 percent of the V15's suction and 84 percent of its airflow, and the V12 scored 96 on the carpet deep-clean test, four points off the V15's perfect score. On hard floors with the Laser Slim Fluffy, Vacuum Wars saw near-perfect pickup and TechGearLab measured 95 percent of test debris cleared from hardwood; Top Ten Reviews cleared flour, oats and crumbs in a single pass.

The laser works as on the V15: a green line across the floor that shows dust a ceiling light hides, most useful along baseboards. The piezo sensor counts particles by size at the inlet, sorts them on the screen and raises power in Auto when the count climbs, which is how a 60-minute Eco rating becomes about 30 minutes of realistic Auto cleaning.

Hair handling was clean in Vacuum Wars' tests, with minimal tangling on either head, and the box includes the motorized Hair Screw Tool, which Top Ten Reviews ran over stairs and pet bedding without a wrap. Filtration is a five-stage sealed system that Dyson rates at 99.99 percent of particles down to 0.3 microns; TechGearLab's particle count came back excellent. The battery is removable and the warranty is two years.

Where it falls short

The bin. At 0.38 L it is half the V15's and less than a third of the V16's effective capacity. TechGearLab found it fills within a session, is fiddly to release and throws clog warnings when full. Top Ten Reviews found emptying easy; the interval is the problem in a large house or a multi-pet home.

Deep carpet. The V12 ships with the standard direct-drive Motorbar rather than the V15's Digital Motorbar, and TechGearLab measured 78 percent pickup on low-pile carpet and 44 percent on high pile, with 75 and 57 percent on pet hair. Vacuum Wars' 96 deep-clean score is very good, but the V15 is the better carpet machine and the gap widens as the pile deepens. Vacuum Wars also found the Motorbar struggles with large debris on hard floors, which is what the Fluffy head is for.

Run time at power. Max lasts about 8 minutes at TechGearLab and under 10 at Top Ten Reviews; Auto gives roughly 30. Charging took 2.7 hours at TechGearLab and about 4 at Top Ten Reviews. The V12's battery is also not interchangeable with other Dyson models.

Noise. Vacuum Wars measured 85 dB and TechGearLab 84 dBA at Max, the loudest of our four, though Top Ten Reviews measured about 73 dB in Auto, where most cleaning happens.

How it compares

Against the Dyson V15 Detect, the V12 gives up about a quarter of the sealed suction, half the bin, the Digital Motorbar and four points of deep-clean score, and gains 1.6 lb of relief and a button. For a small or hard-floor home the trade is worth it; for a large carpeted one it is not. Our Dyson V12 Detect Slim vs V15 Detect comparison puts the two side by side on weight, suction, carpet pickup, run time and bin size.

Against the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty, the V12 is nearly 3 lb lighter with the fuller tool kit, the laser and a minutes readout; the Shark scores a perfect 100 on carpet, measures 112 inches of sealed suction and empties its own bin.

Against the Dyson V16 Piston Animal Submarine, the V12 is the stairs-and-apartment answer; the V16 is the whole-house one, with roughly three times the effective bin and ten more Eco minutes for about 2.3 lb more.

Bottom line. Buy the V12 Detect Slim if you live in an apartment or a mostly hard-floor home, clean a lot of stairs, or find a 6.8 lb stick and a held trigger tiring. Buy the V15 Detect if your home has real carpet, a shedding pet or enough floor to fill a small bin every session; it measures stronger in every cleaning test and is the cordless Vacuum Wars ranks first.

Verdict

The V12 Detect Slim is the right buy when weight is what decides whether the vacuum comes out of the closet. It carries the V15's sensor, laser and filtration in a body most people can take up a flight of stairs one-handed, and the measured cleaning stays close behind. The small bin and the weaker deep-carpet numbers are real; if your floors are mostly carpet or your house is big, step up to the V15.
