Who it's for
The V15 Detect is for a household that has real carpet and real hard floor and wants one stick that handles both without excuses. It launched in 2021, and as of September 24, 2026 it still sits first in Vacuum Wars' cordless ranking, ahead of the newer V16, and it is the cordless vacuum RTINGS names as the best it has tested. The reasons are measurable rather than sentimental: the highest sealed suction Vacuum Wars has recorded on a cordless stick, a perfect score on its embedded-sand carpet test, and a sealed HEPA path that keeps fine dust inside the machine.
It suits people who vacuum a few times a week, have a wall spot for the charging dock, and do not mind tipping out a 0.77 L bin by hand. On our list of the best cordless stick vacuums it is the pick for the mixed-floor house with a shedding dog.
What stands out
Start with the numbers. Dyson rates the motor at 240 AW; Vacuum Wars measured 124 inches of water lift at the base, which it describes as class-leading, and a 100 on carpet deep cleaning, a test of how much sand the vacuum pulls back out of a carpet after it has been ground in. TechGearLab's separate protocol found 99 percent pickup on hardwood and 94 percent on low-pile carpet, and Expert Reviews cleared all of a hard-floor spill in a single pass.
Two heads split the work. The Fluffy Optic is a soft roller for hard floors with a green laser angled low across the floor, so fine dust that a ceiling light hides shows up in the beam. The Digital Motorbar is the carpet head, with a bristled bar and combs that strip long hair off as it spins. Expert Reviews found no hair on either roller after a session that filled the bin with it, and Vacuum Wars rated the small motorized Hair Screw Tool for sofas and pet beds as the best tangle-resistant tool it has used.
The piezo sensor is what makes Auto mode useful. It counts particles by size as they pass the inlet, plots them on the LCD, and raises motor power when the count jumps. When the floor is clean, power drops and the battery lasts longer, and the same screen shows the minutes left at the current setting, so you know whether the landing can wait.
Filtration is sealed from the head to the exhaust. TechGearLab's particle counter came back with an excellent result, and Vacuum Wars considers the V15 suitable for allergy households.
Where it falls short
The trigger. The V15 only runs while you squeeze it, which TechGearLab found tiring on a whole-house clean and which the V12 and V16 avoid with a push button. Combined with 2,069 g in the handle, it is the least pleasant of our Dysons to hold above shoulder height.
Suction on carpet cuts both ways. At Max, Vacuum Wars and TechGearLab both found the head seals to the pile and drags, so you end up using Auto anyway. Max also empties the battery in 9 to 11 minutes depending on the test, and a full recharge takes about 4.5 hours by Dyson's figure. High-pile carpet is a weak spot for every stick, and TechGearLab measured 49 percent there.
There is no self-emptying dock and no way to add one. If that is the feature you want, the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty is the answer on our list.
How it compares
Against the Dyson V16 Piston Animal Submarine, the V15 gives up the button, ten minutes of Eco run time, the compressing bin and the wet roller, and sits in a lower price class. Its sealed suction is far higher, 124 inches to 85, and Mumsnet and CHOICE both found the V15's bristle bar cleared carpet more completely than the V16's cones, even though both scored 100 on Vacuum Wars' deep-clean test. It is also about 0.7 lb lighter.
Against the Dyson V12 Detect Slim, the V15 has about a third more sealed suction, twice the bin, the Digital Motorbar instead of the standard head and four more points of deep-clean score. The V12 has the button and weighs 1.6 lb less. The full side-by-side, from measured suction to run time and noise, is in our Dyson V12 Detect Slim vs V15 Detect comparison.
Against the Shark, the V15 has 12 more inches of sealed suction, a laser, a minutes readout and a fuller tool kit; the Shark empties itself, runs longer in Eco and sits in a lower price class.

Bottom line. Buy the V12 Detect Slim if you live in an apartment or a mostly hard-floor home, clean a lot of stairs, or find a 6.8 lb stick and a held trigger tiring. Buy the V15 Detect if your home has real carpet, a shedding pet or enough floor to fill a small bin every session; it measures stronger in every cleaning test and is the cordless Vacuum Wars ranks first.
Verdict
Five years on, the V15 Detect still holds the top spot in the independent rankings because the parts that matter, measured suction, carpet deep cleaning, sealed filtration and hair handling, are still the best in class. Its faults are ergonomic. Buy the Shark if you refuse to empty a bin, the V12 if weight decides whether you vacuum at all, and the V16 if hard floors and long hair dominate. For everyone else, this is the stick.
