PetSafe · Self-cleaning litter box
PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin
The budget self-cleaning box from a brand with US support: quiet, sealed for two weeks, with weight tracking and a child lock. It senses a cat leaving, not arriving, and suits medium cats, so buy it with those limits in mind.

At a glance
What stands out
- Side-to-side rotating drum that Cats.com describes as quiet, with a large opening for its class
- 6 L sealed drawer with an essential-oil deodorizer, rated by PetSafe for up to two weeks

- App logs visits and tracks each cat's weight over time and warns when the drawer is filling
- One-year limited warranty and a 45-day satisfaction guarantee from a long-established US brand
Flaws to know

- Ships unassembled, and Cats.com found assembly more involved than expected
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, no preset cleaning schedules

Who it's for
The ScoopFree SmartSpin is the self-cleaning box for a household that wants an established US brand, a sealed drawer and app weight tracking without paying for a Whisker. PetSafe rates it for cats up to 25 lb, and Cats.com's review adds a floor of 2.5 lb and six months of age. It is Cats.com's best-budget pick in its September 2026 ranking, and it is the budget pick on our self-cleaning litter box list.
It fits one or two medium cats, a home that already uses clumping litter, and an owner who is around enough to notice if something goes wrong. It is not the box for a 20 lb cat, for a shy cat that bolts into the box unannounced, or for anyone who wants the most complete sensor set in the category.
What stands out
The design is a rotating drum on a wooden-footed base with the entry 12 in from the floor. Cats.com's reviewer describes the opening as larger than many competitors' and the cycle as quiet, and notes that the drum turns side to side rather than tipping end over end, which the reviewer counts as a point in its favor for keeping a cat from being trapped. A 6 L sealed waste drawer with an essential-oil deodorizer is rated for up to two weeks; PetSafe claims four times the odor control of an open tray, which is a manufacturer figure.
Controls are practical. The panel has on-demand cleaning and a child lock, and the app tracks each visit and the cat's weight over time, warns when the drawer is filling, and lets you set a delay of up to an hour after a visit before the drum turns. PetSafe says any litter works and recommends a premium clumping type.
Cats.com also liked how easily it comes apart for a deep clean, and PetSafe includes a supply of waste bags and two deodorizer packs. The company sells through Amazon, big-box pet chains and its own site, publishes a one-year limited warranty and offers a 45-day satisfaction guarantee.
Where it falls short
The sensor set is the honest gap. The SmartSpin uses weight sensors to know when a cat has left and then waits out the delay; it does not sense a cat approaching. Cats.com's reviewer states plainly that a cycle will not stop mid-spin unless you pause it or the cat climbs inside and trips the weight sensor. The side-to-side rotation softens the risk, but this is a step below the approach detection on the Whisker and PETKIT picks. Use the longest delay, and keep the box where a second cat cannot rush in during a cycle.
Size is the second issue. PetSafe's 25 lb rating is generous; Cats.com found it a poor fit for large cats and calls it best for medium-sized ones, and the Litter-Robot 4 has a far wider 15.75 in entry. Our reading of the reviews is that cats over about 15 lb will feel cramped, and the 12 in step is a stretch for seniors and kittens.
Assembly is on you. The box ships in pieces and Cats.com found it more involved than expected. The app runs on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only and has no preset cleaning schedules, and the drawer is emptied by hand like every other box in the class; Cats.com counts that as a weakness, though of our four picks only the PETKIT closes the bag for you. Some owners in Cats.com's report describe the sifter drifting out of alignment.
How it compares
Against the Litter-Robot 4, the Whisker wins on every safety and capacity line: laser plus weight detection with a pinch sensor, a 15.75 in entry, a 3 to 25 lb range that reviewers actually endorse, four-cat capacity and a 90-day trial. The SmartSpin sits a price class lower, has a child lock and a two-week drawer, and takes up less floor.
Against the PETKIT Purobot Ultra, PETKIT's box adds 20 sensors that stop the drum when a cat is near, a bin that seals its own bags and is rated for 20 days, and a camera that recognizes cats by face, in the top price class and on a footprint 32 in deep. The SmartSpin is the simpler, more compact machine with the more familiar brand.
Verdict
Buy the SmartSpin if you have one or two medium cats, want weight tracking and a sealed drawer from a brand with a US support line, and accept that it senses a cat leaving rather than a cat arriving. If your cat is large, skittish or fast into the box, spend more on the Litter-Robot 4.
