Who it's for
The Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (model BOV900BSS) is a large countertop convection oven that also toasts, air fries, slow cooks and dehydrates. It is the overall pick on our countertop oven list because it is the model independent testers most often put first: America's Test Kitchen named it its top air-fryer toaster oven in the August 2026 update of its review, and it earned the highest overall score of the 11 ovens TechGearLab bought and tested.
It suits a household of two to six that bakes, roasts and air fries several times a week and would rather not heat the full-size oven for a sheet of vegetables, a batch of cookies or a chicken. With 1 cubic foot inside, it is one of the few countertop ovens that can genuinely take over most weeknight oven jobs.
It is not for a small kitchen, and it is not the best choice if toast is most of what you make. If you only want crisp food and never toast, a basket model from our air fryer list takes far less room.
What stands out
Temperature control. In TechGearLab's 30-minute test at a 350°F setting, the Breville averaged about 5.2°F off target, which works out to 98.6 percent accuracy and was among the best results in the group. America's Test Kitchen found its food the best of the group across its cooking tests. Breville attributes this to its Element IQ system, which shifts power between six independent quartz elements, and to PID temperature control, which Breville says limits overshoot.
Capacity. Breville says the cavity takes nine slices of bread, a 14-pound turkey, most 9 x 13 inch pans, a 12-cup muffin tray and a 5-quart Dutch oven for slow cooking, and it ships with a 13-inch pizza pan. ATK notes that it holds more food than its favorite basket air fryer, which matters for anyone cooking for more than two.
Air frying. ATK found its french fries and chicken Parmesan on par with the same recipes made in its top basket air fryer. Tom's Guide was a little cooler on this: breaded chicken, Brussels sprouts and fries came out crisp and browned, but not quite at the level of the best dedicated air fryers, and chicken wings were less crisp than hoped. Tom's Guide also notes that you can change the convection fan speed and set a rotate reminder for some modes.
Ease of use. TechGearLab gave it a perfect score for ease of use, citing the backlit LCD, clearly labeled dials and presets that were easy to adjust. ATK described the controls as intuitive. Beyond the usual modes, it has proof, slow cook and dehydrate settings, and a mesh basket that doubles for air frying and drying fruit.
Warranty. Breville covers the oven for two years and glass defects for five, longer than the one year Ninja offers on the French Door Premier.
Where it falls short
Size. Breville lists it at 21.4 inches wide, 17.3 deep and 12.7 tall, and gives a weight of 38.9 pounds, which Tom's Guide also reported. It needs a dedicated spot on the counter with room to vent, and it is not something you move to a cupboard between uses.
Preheating. TechGearLab measured 5.4 minutes to reach 350°F, the slowest of the 11 ovens it tested. The compact Panasonic FlashXpress reached the same temperature in 1.6 minutes.
Toast. Results depend on who is testing. ATK called its toast excellent. TechGearLab scored its toasting 6.8 out of 10 and timed 4.8 minutes on medium. Tom's Guide found that a full load of nine slices browned unevenly, with pale slices at the sides, and took almost six minutes on medium. If most of your use is toast, the Cuisinart TOA-70 and the Panasonic both scored 8.3 for toasting in TechGearLab's test.
Heat and cleanup. Tom's Guide measured 252°F on top of the glass window during cooking, and noted that the accessories are not dishwasher safe. ATK found the large cavity and uncoated air fry basket a chore to clean after roast chicken or melted cheese. TechGearLab also reports PFAS in the coating of the included pizza pan, if that matters to you.
How it compares
Against the Ninja French Door Premier, the Ninja takes less width, preheats in about 90 seconds and is built around a 5-quart air fry basket, but it has a one-year warranty and less independent test data. Our Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro vs Ninja FO101 comparison goes through controls, capacity, preheat and air frying side by side. Against the Cuisinart TOA-70, the Cuisinart costs less, toasts better in TechGearLab's scores and uses simple dials, but ran about 22°F hot in the same test and holds six slices instead of nine.

Bottom line. Buy the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro if you bake and roast as much as you air fry, want the simplest controls of the pair and have room for a 21-inch-wide oven. Buy the Ninja French Door Premier if air-fried weeknight meals are the main job, you want food started within a couple of minutes and you need a smaller, lighter box. The Breville costs more and carries the longer warranty.
Verdict
The Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro is the countertop oven to buy if you want the most accurate, most capable all-rounder and have the space and budget for it. Its slow preheat, hot exterior and mixed toast results are real, but no other model we looked at combines its capacity with its lab results. More options are in the kitchen category.
