Breville Luxe Brewer Thermal
The Luxe Brewer Thermal is the most programmable SCA-certified brewer on our list: set it the night before, or tune bloom, temperature and flow for each coffee. It is big, and its warranty is shorter than the Moccamaster's.

Who it's for
The Luxe Brewer Thermal is for two kinds of drip drinker. The first wants to load water and grounds at night and wake up to a full thermal carafe of coffee brewed to specialty standards. The second buys light-roast beans and wants to nudge temperature, bloom and flow to suit them. It is the programmable pick on our list of the best drip coffee makers because it is the only certified brewer there that does both.
Breville released it in May 2025, according to Tom's Guide, as a newer sibling to the 2017 Precision Brewer. The Precision Brewer is still sold, but the Luxe fixes that machine's most common complaint: its water tank now lifts out.
What stands out
Programmability comes in two layers. The delay start lets you set a brew time up to 24 hours ahead. The Custom mode lets you set bloom volume, bloom time, brew temperature and flow rate, and the machine remembers that profile for one-touch use afterwards. For people who never want to touch those settings, the default Brew mode runs parameters that meet the Specialty Coffee Association's golden cup standard; the SCA lists both the thermal and glass versions as certified in 2025. CoffeeKev notes the heater uses PID control, so temperature swings less than on typical drip machines.
It is fast. Tom's Guide timed a full 60-ounce carafe at 3 minutes 15 seconds, and its reviewer called the result flavorful and not burnt hours later. Reviewed made it its most versatile pick and said the flavor came very close to the Moccamaster that tops its list.
The removable 60-ounce tank has measuring lines, a wide lid and a built-in water filter. Tom's Guide found it easy to clean because of the wide opening, and CoffeeKev singles it out as the key upgrade over the Precision Brewer.
Filter choice is broader than usual. The machine ships with a flat-bottom basket, a cone insert and a reusable mesh basket. Tom's Guide found the cone with V60 #2 paper filters produced the best-tasting coffee, while the mesh basket saves on paper and leaves a little oil in the cup.
For small batches under about 20 ounces, CoffeeKev explains that taking the carafe lid off makes the machine hold water in the basket for roughly four minutes before releasing it, similar to an immersion dripper. The same steep-and-release system runs the Cold Brew mode, which CoffeeKev says can be set from 30 minutes to 36 hours.
The thermal carafe is rated to keep coffee above 150°F for up to four hours. CoffeeKev measured it holding slightly more heat than the Precision Brewer's carafe, with a lid that is easier to seat.
Where it falls short
Size is the first thing to check. Tom's Guide describes it as about 16 inches tall and nearly 15 inches wide; it fit the office counter but not the reviewer's home kitchen. Measure the space under your cabinets before buying.
Cleaning is all by hand. Tom's Guide found nothing is dishwasher safe, although the tank, baskets and wide-mouth carafe are easy to wash.
It is quiet for most of the brew, then gets loud. CoffeeKev measured under 40 dB for most of the cycle and about 65 dB at the end, when the pump runs nearly dry and the tank lid rattles.
The warranty is two years. Tom's Guide points out that competitors such as Fellow and Braun offer three and Moccamaster offers five. Tom's Guide also found the printed manual hard to follow, particularly for cold brew.
How it compares
The Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select sits in a similar price class. It is simpler, has a longer warranty and lifetime repairs, and brews a full pot in about six and a half minutes according to Tom's Guide, but it has no timer and uses a glass carafe on a hot plate.
The OXO Brew 8-Cup is the smaller, cheaper certified option with a thermal carafe, but no timer, no custom settings and a fixed tank.
Custom temperature and bloom settings only pay off with an even grind. The Baratza Encore ESP and Breville Smart Grinder Pro both cover drip as well as espresso.
Verdict
The Luxe Brewer Thermal is the pick if a timer is non-negotiable and you still want SCA-level extraction, or if you want to experiment with brew variables without moving to manual pour-over. Check your counter height first, and accept that you will be hand washing and living with a two-year warranty.
