Amazon Basics Carry-On Travel Backpack
The budget fallback: a 40 L clamshell pack with a big laptop sleeve, compression straps and straps that stow for shoulder carry, in the lowest price class on our list. Reviewers agree it is fine for a few trips a year and not built for heavy loads or hard use.

Who it's for
This is the budget pick on our travel backpack list, and it is there for a specific traveler: someone who flies a few times a year, packs light and would rather not spend much on a bag that spends most of its life in a closet. Switchback Travel names it the best budget travel backpack in its 2026 ranking. Pack Hacker and OutdoorGearLab are cooler on it, and their reasons are worth reading before you buy.
It suits students, a first backpacking trip, or a spare bag for a family member. It does not suit anyone who walks far with a full load or travels every month. For those trips, the extra money for the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L or the Osprey Farpoint 40 buys a much better harness.
What stands out
The layout is the good part. The main compartment opens as a clamshell with a side hinge, the same suitcase-style packing that the more expensive bags offer, and Amazon's listing describes a zippered mesh section inside. A front compartment takes the small things you want to reach without opening the bag. Pack Hacker called that front compartment well organized, and Switchback's reviewer found the capacity and organization good for the money.
There is plenty of room for a short trip. Reviewers treat it as a 40 L bag, and a zippered expansion adds about 10 percent more by Amazon's figure. Compression straps pull it back in once you have zipped the expansion closed. The padded laptop sleeve takes a large laptop: Switchback lists 16 to 17 in and Pack Hacker 17 in, more than the 15 in sleeve in the Allpa.
It is also flexible to carry. The shoulder straps stow away so the bag can be carried by its handles or on a shoulder strap like a duffel. And the build held up better than you might expect in Switchback's May 2026 review, which reported no rips, frayed seams or loose threads after months of use.
Where it falls short
Comfort is the main weakness. Switchback describes minimal padding in the shoulder straps and a hip belt that is little more than webbing, and it concludes the bag carries more like a duffel than a true backpack. Pack Hacker found the back support uncomfortable. That is fine for a walk from the parking garage to the gate, and tiring on a long walk between stations.
Durability is less certain than Switchback's result suggests. Pack Hacker's zipper pulls broke after two months, the zippers are not YKK, and both Pack Hacker and Switchback describe the materials as feeling cheap. OutdoorGearLab placed it 13th of 17 travel packs in its August 2026 update.
Weight and size are ordinary at best. Switchback weighed 3 lb 10.2 oz and Pack Hacker 3.64 lb, heavier than the Cotopaxi Allpa despite much simpler materials. Amazon lists 21.5 x 13.8 x 9.5 in, and Pack Hacker measured 8.5 in deep closed and 10.5 in expanded. Keep the expansion zipped and the bag stays close to the 22 x 14 x 9 in US limit; open it and you are an inch and a half over. Pack Hacker counts it as compliant with about 63 percent of the airlines it checks.
How it compares
Against the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L: the Allpa is lighter, tougher and far more comfortable, with a padded hip belt and mesh compartments that work as built-in packing cubes. It costs several times more. If you travel more than a few times a year, it is the better buy.
Against the Osprey Farpoint 40: same 40 L class and the same suitcase-style opening, but the Osprey has a LightWire frame, an adjustable torso and a padded hip belt, and GearJunkie rated the previous version the best carrying travel pack it tried.
If you are choosing between a cheap backpack and a cheap suitcase, our carry-on luggage list covers the rolling side, including a hardside from the same brand.
Verdict
Buy the Amazon Basics Carry-On Travel Backpack if you need a clamshell carry-on pack for a few light trips a year and want to spend as little as possible. Keep it light, keep the expansion zipped for strict airlines, and move up to the Allpa or the Farpoint if you will carry it far or often.
