At a glance

What stands out

  • 2 hp motor and 48-ounce container; TechGearLab gave it a perfect 10 for frozen drinks and 9.0 for smoothies, 85/100 overall
  • 18 inches tall by Vitamix's figure (16.75 measured by ATK) and 10.5 lb; fits where the 5200 cannot
  • Ten-speed dial plus pulse; container is dishwasher safe and self-cleans with soap and water
  • 5-year full warranty covering parts, performance, labor and shipping; ATK's highly recommended alternative to the 5200

Flaws to know

  • Loud at the top of the dial: 95 dB at ATK, 98.2 dB at top speed in Nutrition Refined's test
  • No programs and no timer; nut butter needed a lot of tamping, stirring and added oil at TechGearLab
  • Soup reached only 112°F in TechGearLab's test, and the reviewer noticed an electrical smell on more than one unit during long high-speed runs
  • Vitamix's store still lists it, but Nutrition Refined already calls it discontinued; check availability

Who it's for

The E310 is the Vitamix for a small kitchen. It has the same nominal 2 horsepower as the 5200, the same fixed-blade container design and the same kind of dial, in a body Vitamix lists at 18 inches tall and ATK measured at 16.75. That clears a standard upper cabinet, which the 5200 does not. It is the lowest price class of the three Vitamix machines on our best blenders list, and TechGearLab's guide calls it the best-value Vitamix.

It suits one or two people who make smoothies and frozen drinks most days and would rather have a real motor than a program button. The 48-ounce container is the right size for that, and ATK, which lists it at 6 cups, found the machine excelled at every task it set and placed it in its highly recommended tier just below the 5200.

It is not for anyone who wants to press a button and walk away, or who counts on the blender for hot soup. Both points are dealt with below.

What stands out

Frozen drinks are the headline. TechGearLab gave the E310 a perfect 10 for frozen drinks, the only one of the four picks to get it, with a margarita finished in under 15 seconds of pulsing and ice broken down cleanly and evenly. Smoothies scored 9.0, second only to the 5200's 10, with a texture the reviewer described as fluffy and evenly blended. The overall 85 out of 100 puts it above the 5200 in that lab's ranking and four points below the Ascent X2.

Simplicity is the second strength. The dial runs from 1 to 10, there is a pulse switch, and that is the whole interface. There is nothing digital to fail, and self-cleaning is warm soapy water at a low or medium speed. TechGearLab scored cleaning 8.1, far better than the 5200's 3.5, because the shorter container is easier to reach into, and Vitamix lists the container as dishwasher safe.

The warranty is the third. Five years, and Vitamix describes it as full, covering parts, performance, labor and two-way shipping. That is shorter than the 5200's seven and the X2's ten, but five times the Ninja BN701's.

Where it falls short

Soup is the biggest. The E310 has the same 2 hp rating as the 5200, but in TechGearLab's test its soup reached only 112°F, warm rather than hot, against just over 153°F for the 5200 and 147°F for the X2's program. The reviewer also noticed a strange electrical smell after extended runs at high speed, and reported it on more than one test unit. If a raw-to-hot soup is a weekly job, this is the wrong Vitamix.

Noise is the second. ATK measured 95 dB, and Nutrition Refined's frozen-smoothie test, same load and meter position for every machine, put it at 98.2 dB, above the 5200's 96.9 and the X2's 92.5. TechGearLab makes the same point in words: it gets a lot louder at the top of the dial.

Programs are the third. There are none, and no timer, so a nut butter or a thick puree means standing at the counter working the tamper. TechGearLab's almond butter finished very smooth but only after a lot of tamping, stirring and extra oil, and the lab scored pureeing 7.2 and controls 7.0, its lowest sub-scores for this machine, for exactly that reason.

Availability is worth a note. Vitamix's store listed the E310 in black, red and slate with no retired marking when we checked, and Joy of Blending's January 2026 guide treats it as current, but Nutrition Refined's September 2026 update calls it discontinued and Vitamix has been moving its range toward the Ascent X series. If it disappears, the Ascent X2 is the closest current model at the same 48-ounce size.

How it compares

Against the Vitamix 5200, the 5200 makes denser smoothies, heats soup to a serving temperature and holds 64 ounces, with a 7-year warranty. The E310 fits under a cabinet, is easier to clean and sits a price class lower, but it is louder by both labs' readings and much weaker at soup. If height is not an issue and soup is, buy the 5200.

Against the Ninja BN701, the Ninja has three programs, a 72-ounce pitcher and a removable blade at a much lower price class, and crushes ice nearly as well. The E310 makes smoother green smoothies, has a real motor behind it and carries five years of warranty against one. The Ninja is the pick for frozen drinks and shakes on a budget; the E310 for anyone who wants Vitamix texture in a compact machine.

Verdict

The Explorian E310 is the compact Vitamix: the same motor class and container design as the 5200 in a body that clears a standard cabinet, with a perfect frozen-drink score at TechGearLab and a 5-year full warranty. It is loud, it has no programs, and its soup result was disappointing. For a small kitchen where smoothies and frozen drinks are the job, it is the best value in the Vitamix range; for programs or soup, step up to the Ascent X2.
